I purchased this detector based on other reviews that described it as “false alert city.” To me, that indicates it’s a superior product due to its heightened sensitivity compared to other detectors. My research and various reviews confirm that this detector is the most sensitive available. The Quiet Mode is fantastic, along with its ability to self-adjust sensitivity based on speed.
THIS RADAR DETECTOR IS NOT USER-FRIENDLY!!! (I would emphasize this if I could.) If you’re looking for something that you can simply plug in and use, this detector isn’t for you. Firmware updates require a laptop or PC, but the process is straightforward.
Here are clear instructions for updating the firmware for any of the R-models:
Search for “Uniden (Revision #) R7 firmware update” on Google. This will lead you to Uniden’s firmware download page. You only need to download the Windows/Mac installer, depending on your system. Connect the radar detector to your PC using the included USB cable, run the installer, and after installation, adjust your radar detector settings. I recommend setting the sensitivity to adjust automatically based on speed and enabling quiet drive with a limit of 20 or 30 mph, depending on your preference. Save and exit, and then you can mount your radar detector and plug it in.
Anyone who complains about “false alert city” likely hasn’t properly configured their radar detector for their environment (and may have set it to LONG range manually). This is the quietest and most accurate radar detector I’ve ever owned. COBRA doesn’t compare to the quality of this unit.
If you want a radar detector that is also user-friendly, I highly recommend Escort. The premium you pay is for their user-friendliness, as they offer a very simple software suite that’s easy for average users to navigate.
My only complaint is that this unit isn’t user-friendly, which didn’t bother me but may concern others. Take the time to configure it to your liking, and it will be worth it. It will not function as desired straight out of the box.
As for the complaints about false alerts, they stem from smart cars with radar proximity sensors—my car has one. It uses 3-4 frequencies that consistently trigger the radar detector when there are nearby cars or walls. To resolve this, ensure auto-mute is enabled and allow muting of the KA band. There’s also a toggleable setting to ignore weak signals that should be activated.
After your next drive, your UNIDEN will automatically start disregarding the radar signals as they spam you and will auto-mute them. I also want to mention that this radar detector managed to detect a cop using active scanning while I was driving around three turns. I’ve never seen a radar detector achieve this. I detected him about half a mile away, around three turns. It’s impressively accurate now that it’s set up correctly. I’m changing my rating to 5/5. It requires some configuration, but I’ve never used a better radar detector.

I purchased this to keep myself accountable, and it certainly does the job. The warning distance is exceptional, and it even indicates the direction of incoming alerts. Sometimes, I realize I’m going a bit faster than I thought when it alerts me to slow down. The adjustments and tuning options are incredibly precise. It offers numerous functions; if you encounter a location where other detectors might trigger, you can mute this one for that area, and if it becomes inactive there, you can reactivate it. The mute button is conveniently located right by the plug-in. Overall, it’s worth every penny I spent on it.

I purchased this product a while ago before I started receiving items for review, and I am very pleased with its performance, features, and support! There might be fancier models from other brands, possibly Uniden, but this one truly has everything you need. It provides excellent alerts, offers display adjustments, has a mute/mark button on the power cable, and is affordably priced. I also own the Escort 9500i, which is a solid detector as well. Neither has failed me. The only tickets I’ve received were when I was distracted or really focused on my music instead of the detectors. The main difference? The Escort requires a payment for database updates—another subscription! Meanwhile, the friendly customer service team at Uniden regularly updates the database for free. All you have to do is download, connect, and update. In terms of performance, both models have been on par for me. While I know there are newer models available, I’m sticking with Uniden. This detector works exceptionally well, and you can’t beat the no-cost database and firmware updates.
